ABOUT THE MERCER COUNTY CONSUMER NETWORK

The ORIGINS of a NETWORK, cont'd from Home page

it's good to know there are plenty of home-grown businesspeople who still care about the customer first. And they need everyone's support.

As consumers, most of us have been in a situation where we've needed help and had no idea where to turn. We ask our friends and family what to do, who to call. In my case, the air in my relatively new car quit working. The dealer told me they'd have to replace the compressor and that it would cost $500 because the car was out of warranty.

That's a lot of money. A friend of mine suggested a local repair shop, so I took it in. After a few minutes, the owner came back out and said, "We checked it out, and you were a little low on freon. I topped it off - works fine now." "How much do I owe you?" I asked. "Don't worry about it," he said. "It was only half a can."

Hmmm...where do you think I take my vehicles now? And who's at the top of my list when someone I know needs a good mechanic? Funny thing is, I used to pass by their business all the time. I just didn't know what they did - or how good they were.

Too often, honest, hardworking businesspeople find it difficult to succeed because of time, advertising costs, and competition from national chains. The Mercer County Consumer Network is here to support them. And we let them help each other in the process. It's a place for sharing ideas and offering advice. An opportunity to build new connections and friendships that span rivers, cross valleys, and bridge the distance between city lines. An organization focused on local businesses, all of whom are focused on you, the consumer.
